So, how did my Section II football finals predictions pan out? Take a look for yourself.
Class AA
Prediction: Shenendehowa 28, Columbia 14
Actual: Shen 49, Columbia 7
For the first two weeks of the playoffs, I didn't give Columbia enough credit and picked the Blue Devils to lose. Last week I gave Columbia a little too much credit, and Shen steamrolled to a 35-0 halftime lead on its way to another in its series of blowout victories. At least this time, my prediction of a Columbia loss came true.
Class A
Prediction: Burnt Hills 21, Amsterdam 14
Actual: Burnt Hills 26, Amsterdam 23
As I suspected, Burnt Hills learned its lesson from its seven-turnover, 23-7 regular season loss to Amsterdam and did a great job of protecting the ball. As a result, the Spartans were able to hang in with the Rugged Rams until they scored the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
Class B
Prediction: Schalmont 14, Albany Academy 6
Actual: Schalmont 36, Albany Academy 35 (OT)
I said it was going to be close, and it was. I also said it was going to be low scoring, and it was anything but a defensive battle. And if not for Devon Willis' two-point conversion, this would have been Albany Academy's title and not Schalmont's title.
Class C
Prediction: Hoosick Falls 41, Fonda 27
Actual: Hoosick Falls 32, Fonda 7
Like Shen, Hoosick Falls was too good for the rest of Section II. Just ask a Fonda team that had been strong on both sides of the ball before running into the Indians.
Class D
Prediction: Cambridge 42, Rensselaer 14
Actual: Cambridge 65, Rensselaer 30
If there was a mercy rule in high school football, it should have been used at halftime after Cambridge built a 46-14 lead. This was no contest from the beginning, which you hate to see in a Sectional final.
Record for the week: 5-0.
Final playoff prediction record: 20-3. Take me to Las Vegas because I'm feeling lucky.
